A care card will be provided with every original but here are some tips to keep in mind:
A varnished oil painting is quite durable, and most of its care is about where it hangs and keeping things gentle.Where to Hang It
Out of direct sunlight. Sun fades pigments and yellows varnish. Normal room light is fine.
Away from heat and damp. Avoid radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, kitchens, bathrooms, and cold or damp exterior walls.
Steady conditions. Aim for about 60-75°F and 40-55% humidity. Sudden swings are what crack paint over time.
Hang it securely. Use hooks or D-rings rated for its weight, and add small felt or rubber bumpers to the bottom corners so air can move behind it.
Keeping It Clean
Dust gently. Every few weeks, brush the surface lightly with a soft, clean, dry brush.
Skip the liquids. No water, window cleaner, or household sprays, since they can cloud the varnish and harm the paint beneath.
Avoid cloths and feather dusters. They can snag on texture and leave lint.
Handling
Hold it by the frame or the sides of the stretcher, never by the painted surface.
Keep it from bumps and pressure, which can crack the paint from behind.
When moving it, wrap it in clean glassine or acid-free paper, then bubble wrap, and keep it upright.
Good to Know
Oil paint cures slowly over many months, so your painting is best kept gently handled and un-pressed during its first year.
The varnish is a protective layer. After many decades it may yellow or dull, and a professional conservator can safely replace it without touching the paint.
If you notice flaking, cracking, a bulging canvas, or mold, please call a professional art conservator rather than trying to fix it yourself.
